<image:caption>What Happens in Amsterdam - Rachel Lynn Solomon Penguin - May 2025 What we know so far: Rachel Lynn Solomon captured my heart with the emotional depth and authenticity of Business or Pleasure and I am fully okay that the people of Goodreads disagree with me on that. Some of us like a flawed couple that actually communicates and goes beyond surface level insta-love okay! Having embarked on a romantic long weekend to Amsterdam this spring, I’m very much ready for What Happens In Amsterdam, a second-chance romance/marriage of convenience romp set in the city of bikes, tulips, and Van Gogh.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Emperor of Gladness - Ocean Vuong Jonathan Cape - May 2025 What we know so far: Returning to fiction after a few years focused on the world of poetry, I’m already putting my money on Ocean Vuong being on a few award shortlists next year. Vuong loves to make me cry, so I’ll be emotionally preparing for The Emperor of Gladness, which Penguin describes as ‘a big-hearted novel about chosen family, unexpected friendship, and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive.’ If that doesn’t say ‘this book will make you sob’ then I don’t know what does.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We Do Not Part - Han Kang Penguin - February 2025 What we know so far: Having just picked up the Nobel bloody Prize for Literature it’s fair to say Han Kang’s next book will be highly anticipated. I loved The Vegetarian and its examination of the body, human fragility, and difficult family relationships, so We Do Not Part’s synopsis definitely tickles my fancy: We Do Not Part tells the story of a friendship between two women while powerfully reckoning with a hidden chapter of Korean history. Both a hymn to an enduring friendship and an argument for remembering, it is the story of profound love in the face of unspeakable violence—and a celebration of life, however fragile it might be.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 2025 Releases to Get Excited About</image:title>
<image:caption>The Message - Ta-Nehisi Coates Penguin - February 2025 What we know so far: The Water Dancer is one of my favourite books of all time, and I think Coates’ work across fiction and non-fiction places him as close to being James Baldwin’s successor as anyone is going to get. Described as part memoir, part travelogue, part writing primer in The Message Coates travels to locations of extreme injustice, including Palestine - which much of the discourse (and an excruciating CBS interview) around the book has focused on, with zionist media pretty much telling Coates to ‘stay in his lane’ and write about race. One line from Coates was all it took to make me want to read this: ‘I was told Palestine was complicated. Visiting revealed a simple brutal truth.’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Great Big Beautiful Life - Emily Henry Penguin - April 2025 What we know so far: How could I make this list without including the new EmHen? Having only just blessed us with the rom-com gem that was Funny Story, she’s coming back again to give us another book to read, laugh, and cry to on the sunlounger this summer. Great Big Beautiful Life is already sounding like a triple threat: bookworms, an angsty, tall, brunette man, and forced proximity? GET THAT SHIT ON PREORDER.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 2025 Releases to Get Excited About</image:title>
<image:caption>Vanishing World - Sayaka Murata Granta - April 2025 What we know so far: Sayaka Murata’s absurdist and introspective fiction isn’t for everyone, but I love it. Her latest book sounds like another banger, exploring her usual themes of social conformity around sex, parenthood, and marriage - with a dystopian twist. In Vanishing World, children are produced via artificial insemination and raised by parents in ‘clean’, sexless marriages. With this as the norm, the couple at the centre of the novel are caught in a radical new experiment, Eden, an isolated town where both men and women can be artificially inseminated, and children are raised en masse, with their parent anonymised. Based on Earthings and Murata’s short story collection Life Ceremony, I’ll be going into this not ruling out aliens, cannibalism, or incest (don’t ask) as the conclusion of the novel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wild & Wrangled - Lyla Sage Quercus - April 2025 What we know so far: I am already grieving the loss of the Rebel Blue Ranch series and it’s not even over yet. Thee queen of emotionally available cowboys, Lyla Sage, is gifting us one last instalment to wrap up the series. I usually don’t love a second-chance romance because you miss all of that good first-meeting tension. But having seen the characters Cam and Dusty in the background of the other Rebel Blue Ranch books, I’m not worried about that, in fact, there may be too much tension. Yeehaw!</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2024 - All Fours - Miranda July</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m new to Miranda July, but so many people I trust for good book recommendations were raving about this one, so I was keen to pick it up. The premise of All Fours, which follows a 40-something semi-famous artist as she leaves her family for roadtrip, feels like it could be a Rachel Cusk novel, so that’s a great start in my eyes. But I’ve read some…interesting reviews, including ‘lost me at the tampon foreplay and dog shit clean up’ so I’m expecting this to be an interesting but not life-changing read.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2024 - Intermezzo - Sally Rooney</image:title>
<image:caption>This happens with every new Rooney. I am patient. I ignore the hype and the initial wave of people comparing it to how much they like or dislike Normal People. I wait until the paperback comes out, and I usually very much enjoy it in my own time. My plan is flawless - unless they dare to make the paperback cover less stunning than the masterpiece shown on the left. Then I will order the hardback with my tail between my legs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2024 - James - Percival Everett</image:title>
<image:caption>Not reading James feels like my biggest failure of the year, seeing as I went to the first UK date of the book tour for the novel. What kind of fake fan am I? The Trees was one of my favourite reads of last year, and I’ll continue to read the rest of Everett’s books, even if I’m behind the rest of the literary world. Other than being a literary genius, my favourite thing about Everett is that, along with Colson Whitehead, he’s one of the authors I’ve bonded over with my dad. Watch this space for a joint review?</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2024 - I Will Crash - Rebecca Watson</image:title>
<image:caption>I was pretty obsessed with Rebecca Watson’s debut little scratch back in 2021, and can honestly say I continue to think about it to this day (the highest praise for a book imho). I loved how she played with form, how she used disjointed language to put you in the destabilised position of the character, and how immersive her writing was. I should really re-read it! From the reviews, I Will Crash sounds like another triumph. Following a woman after the loss of her estranged brother, as she grapples with the rush of suppressed memories of her childhood and their relationship that his death triggers. Books focused on siblings and complex family relationships are my jam, so I’m actually very disappointed that I haven’t read this yet. One to put on my birthday wishlist in January.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2024 - Butter - Asako Yuzuki</image:title>
<image:caption>How could I not have read Butter? Have I not even stepped foot in a Waterstones branch this year? I have, and I valiantly ignored the absolute onslaught of marketing and table space Waterstones put into this book. Which makes me sound like a hater. What’s been putting me off is that I read a foodie/serial killer book last year, and it just didn’t hit with me, so I’ve been left (pun intended) with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. But I vow to get over this silly reasoning and just read the damn book in 2025.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - so julia? brat tracks as books - Girl, so confusing</image:title>
<image:caption>‘Yeah, I don't know if you like me Sometimes I think you might hate me Sometimes I think I might hate you’ This was my favourite track to choose a book for, because I’m obsessed with books about girlhood, female friendships and the tension around them. We Run the Tides focuses on a close but increasingly turbulent friendship between two thirteen year old girls in a coming-of-age story that charts the effects of jealousy, popularity, lies and budding sexuality on their friendship. Ugh being a girl is so confusing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - so julia? brat tracks as books - Sympathy is a knife</image:title>
<image:caption>‘I feel all these feelings I can't control Oh no, don't know why All this sympathy is just a knife’ While many people speculate that Sympathy is a knife is about a different blond pop star, I couldn’t help but think of Britney when listening to it. In her bestselling memoir The Woman In Me Britney shares the insincere sympathy her family voiced when controlling her behind the scenes, as well as the pain constant comparisons to other female pop stars by the press caused her. The more I think about it the more I think Charli and Britney should have a chat.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - so julia? brat tracks as books - 360</image:title>
<image:caption>‘I’m everywhere, I’m so Julia’ Okay, this one is obvious. Julia just is brat. This whole book is brat. Drugs, partying, insecurity, intense female friendships, generational trauma, fame, more partying and more drugs. I would go as far as saying you can’t really understand brat without reading Down the Drain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - so julia? brat tracks as books - Talk Talk</image:title>
<image:caption>‘And now I wanna approach ya But we've been keeping this a secret And you're surrounded by friends And I'm just wondering what they know’ When reviewing Normal People a common complaint from readers is ‘Why couldn’t they just talk to each other???’, having been frustrated by the lack of communication between Connell and Marianne. I would argue because they’re teenagers/young adults with insecurities and a belief that they are undeserving of the other’s love - but that’s an argument for another day. The more I thought about Talk Talk the more I realised how perfect it is for Normal People (even the cover is a brat-ish green). Connell and Marianne are often skirting around each other at parties, unsure of what the other wants, afraid of embarassing themselves by saying the wrong thing and therefore saying nothing. If only they’d talk talk to each other…</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - so julia? brat tracks as books - Apple</image:title>
<image:caption>‘I think the apple's rotten right to the core From all the things passed down From all the apples coming before’ There are so many books I could have picked for Apple because books about family ties and generational trauma are what I gravitate towards. But On Earth… edged all the others out by 1. being gay and 2. focusing on immigrant parent/child relationships. Despite its catchy melody, Apple is one of the deeper tracks on brat, and Ocean Vuong’s novel feels like a great match.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - so julia? brat tracks as books - Von Dutch</image:title>
<image:caption>‘It’s okay to just admit that you’re jealous of me, Yeah, I heard you talk about me, that’s the word on the street, You’re obsessing, just confess it, put your hands up, It’s obvious I’m your number one’ When it comes to books about our relationship to fame, jealousy and obsession I’m a Fan is top of my list. While Charli is describing herself as the object of envy and popularity, I’m a Fan is from the perspective of the obsessor - a woman fixated on her ex’s instagram famous new side chick. While there’s not much partying in I’m a Fan it does capture the intensity of parasocial relationships and the power dynamic between the ‘number one’ with social capital and the people who obsessively hate them/want to be them. Von Dutch looks at this dynamic and says so what? I’m just living that life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - so julia? brat tracks as books - Mean Girls</image:title>
<image:caption>‘This one’s for all my mean girls, this one’s for all my bad girls’ One of my favourite tracks, even though I couldn’t be further from the girlies Charli describes. When I think of feral mean girls, Bunny immediately comes to mind. Someone on Goodreads described Bunny as ‘the secret history for chronically online tumblr obsessed girlbosses who belong in the psych ward’ and I feel like Mean Girls are those girlbosses: coquette-ish and worshipping Lana Del Rey.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - so julia? brat tracks as books - Spring Breakers</image:title>
<image:caption>'Cause I poured a load of gasoline on the carpet Lit a cigarette, took a drag, then I just flicked it Place went boom, boom, boom, boom, clap, And I just laughed when the bodies went splat’ I nearly picked Penance for Mean Girls, but Spring Breakers has the manic, violent edge that encapsulates the mean-girls-turned-muderous energy of Eliza Clark’s novel. For a book that revolves around a group of teenage girls gleefully setting fire to a beach chalet with a fellow schoolgirl they’ve been torturing inside (no spoiler), Charli’s lyrics are almost spookily close to Penance - maybe she’s an Eliza Clark fan?</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2023 - Ordinary Human Failings - Megan Nolan</image:title>
<image:caption>Every year there are a few books I really want to read but am actually quite concerned about how depressed they’ll make me. This was one of them. In 2023 I leaned into ‘easy’ books more than ever (and finally admitted to myself that I like reading romance novels). Following up Nolan’s critically acclaimed debut Acts of Desperation - which emotionally destroyed me in the best way - Ordinary Human Failings follows a reporter investigating an Irish family implicated in the death of a child on a London estate in the 90s. I know once I get around to reading this it’s going to be incredible, but for now the rom-coms prevail.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2023 - Let the Light Pour In - Lemn Sissay</image:title>
<image:caption>At the other end of the spectrum is Lemn Sissay’s ‘joyous’ Let the Light Pour In. For the last decade, Sissay has penned a short poem as the sun rises on each new day. Doesn’t that just sound lovely? This collection brings together a selection of these poems, and I can see myself starting the day by reading one each morning - after I’ve finally woken up from my fifth alarm. I only read one book of poetry in 2023 so this book completely passed me by, but I’ll definitely be buying a copy to keep me company in these dark winter months.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2023 - Antarctica - Claire Keegan</image:title>
<image:caption>2023 was undeniably Claire Keegan’s year. She’s the kind of author that I imagine other authors hate. Everything she writes is gold. So effortlessly good that you realise some people are just meant to be writers…and others aren’t. She could write a manual for a dishwasher and I’d read it, recommend it to everyone I know, and get a quote tattooed on me. Anyway enough of my speech as head of the Claire Keegan fan club - I’m off to buy a copy of Antarctica so I can complete my Keegan collection.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2023 - Babel - R. F. Kuang</image:title>
<image:caption>I have bought multiple copies of Babel as gifts, but I still haven’t gotten around to reading it myself! I did read Yellowface, which was Kuang’s big release this year (another bestseller in another genre? What an overachiever) but Babel has been scaring me off a little because I’m not an ~experienced Fantasy girlie~. I’ll be about two years late to the Babel discourse once I finally read this, but I’m going to borrow a copy and read it ASAP.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - The Ones That Got Away in 2023 - The List - Yomi Adegoke</image:title>
<image:caption>When this cover first hit Twitter, it created as much buzz in the book-sphere as Taylor Swift announcing new Eras tour dates. From that point on Yomi Adegoke’s The List was guaranteed to be a bestseller, and the glowing endorsement from Bernadine Evaristo was just a cherry on the cake. Described as a juicy Gossip Girl-esque book about the rise and fall of two insta darlings, I can see this being the perfect beach read, so it’s going to have to stay on the shelf for another six months or so.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 5 Books I Want to Read This Summer - Life Ceremony - Sayaka Murata</image:title>
<image:caption>A book of short stories is perfect for those snippets of time when you are waiting for a flight, or your suitcase at baggage claim, or the airport transfer…you get what I mean. Life Ceremony is a new translated collection of stories in Sayaka Murata’s signature style. For those unfamiliar with her work, that means expect some cannibalism, some asexual marriages, and a lot of weirdness. Just be careful who can read over your shoulder on the plane.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 5 Books I Want to Read This Summer - Lessons in Chemistry - Bonnie Garmus</image:title>
<image:caption>Summertime is made for books like Lessons in Chemistry, the kind of book that is described in reviews as ‘joyous’. The 60’s set novel follows Elizabeth Zott, an unconventional chemist who becomes the reluctant star of a beloved cooking show for housewives, and leaves a trail of female empowerment in her wake - which doesn’t please everyone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 5 Books I Want to Read This Summer - Malibu Rising - Taylor Jenkins Reid</image:title>
<image:caption>Taylor Jenkins Reid is the undisputed queen of the escapist beach read, IMHO. Her 2022 offering to the beach read gods is Carrie Soto is Back, out in August. But for those who think hardbacks and the beach shouldn’t mix, ahem me, her latest paperback release ‘Malibu Rising’ is the perfect fix. It’s a juicy page-turner that follows the glamorous lives of the River family in 80’s California, and the life-changing party where their secrets are revealed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 5 Books I Want to Read This Summer - Great Circle - Maggie Shipstead</image:title>
<image:caption>Maggie Shipstead’s Great Circle is a chunky book that will make a great sunbathing companion, and has made the shortlist for this year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction! Spanning from Arctic expeditions and World War II to Hollywood in the 2010’s, Great Circle ties the lives of a daring female aviator and the former child star who will play her on a new biopic.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If any book is going to define Hot Girl Summer 2022 it’s Bolu Babalola’s much anticipated rom-com novel Honey & Spice. Promising spicy romance and Bolu’s signature wit - seriously you need to follow her on Twitter - I’m willing to put my aversion to romance novels aside to have a fling with this book.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 6 Books to Read Before They Hit Screens in 2022 - Pachinko - Min Jin Lee</image:title>
<image:caption>Everyone in the book world raves about Pachinko, and Apple obviously agreed with fans of the novel, turning it into a series that will air in March. The sweeping multi-generational saga set across Japan, Korea and America is a book I have been meaning to read for a while, and the new series has made me even more intrigued. It sounds like if Apple pulls off an adaptation that does the book justice, this could be some of the best TV of the year.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 6 Books to Read Before They Hit Screens in 2022 - Everything I Know About Love - Dolly Alderton</image:title>
<image:caption>If anyone doesn’t know who Dolly Alderton is now, they are definitely going to once Everything I Know About Love becomes a BBC One series later this year. The semi-fictionalised adaptation of Alderton’s 2018 memoir will focus on childhood best friends Birdy and Maggie (in place of real-life Dolly and Farly) as they navigate dating and friendships in London house shares and sticky-carpeted pubs. I have a suspicion that 2022 is going to launch Dolly Alderton to post-Fleabag Phoebe Waller-Bridge levels of attention, so read the book now if you want to get in before the mega-hype.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 6 Books to Read Before They Hit Screens in 2022 - Queenie - Candice Carty-Williams</image:title>
<image:caption>Okay, there’s no evidence that Queenie will be hitting screens this year, but I’m trying to manifest it. Candice Carty-Williams has announced she is creating a series based on her bestselling novel for Channel 4, but that’s all we know so far. For me, Queenie is a book that will translate so well to the screen, given the richness of the characters Carty-Williams creates and how real the story felt. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for any information on the progress of this adaptation!</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 6 Books to Read Before They Hit Screens in 2022 - Conversations With Friends - Sally Rooney</image:title>
<image:caption>Having single-handedly revived BBC Three with an adaptation of Normal People that had everyone sad, horny and creating fan accounts dedicated to Connell’s chain, the BBC is taking another trip around the Rooney block. Conversations with Friends follows best friends and former lovers Frances and Bobbi as they become entangled in the lives of married couple Melissa and Nick. The same creative team as Normal People is at the helm, so more scenes of sexually charged eye contact await.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 6 Books to Read Before They Hit Screens in 2022 - She Said - Jodi Kantor & Megan Twohey</image:title>
<image:caption>She Said explores Harvey Weinstein’s fall from grace penned by the journalists who investigated and broke the story. The non-fiction hit is now being made into a film with Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan playing reporters Kantor and Twohey. As the book tackles the wider culture of sexual harassment in Hollywood and how Weinstein remained protected for so long, this adaptation is bound to attract discussion as Hollywood grapples with Weinstein’s legacy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alice Oseman’s queer webcomic-turned-graphic-novel series is now set to become a Netflix show and the wholesome gay vibes are already calling out to me. Heartstopper follows British teens Nick and Charlie as they develop a relationship while at an all-boys grammar school. I can see this filling the hole—no pun intended—of Netflix’s Sex Education, only if Sex Education was more gay. Have I convinced you yet?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Burntcoat, described as ’an intense, moving novel of love, sex, art and death’ and focusing on a sculptor named Edith, this sounded like a novel that Rachel Cusk would write, so I was in immediately. The reason why I haven’t read it yet? Its set against the backdrop of a deadly global pandemic, and I’m not sure I can face a pandemic novel just yet.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After absolutely binging every memoir I could get my hands on in 2020, I’ve all but neglected the genre in 2021. Crying in H Mart, a memoir exploring grief, food and nostalgia, has been on my radar since before its release in April. Having loved Olivia Potts’ memoir A Half Baked Idea last year—which covered the similar themes—I really should have picked this up by now.</image:caption>

I know I’m going to enjoy Beautiful World, Where Are You, and in a weird way that’s why I haven’t bought it yet. I’ll definitely buy it when it’s out in paperback, and probably read it while sunbathing in the garden next year. But until then, I’m happy knowing its a treat I’ve got in store for a good reading day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Newly launched in 2020, Cipher Press is the independent publisher of queer fiction and non-fiction that this heteronormative world truly needs. Entirely queer owned and run, the indie focused on championing queer voices in genres as diverse as horror, sci-fi, fantasy and literary fiction. Cipher Press has published eight titles so far, including cult writer Brontez Purnell’s 100 Boyfriends and Since I Laid My Burden Down. Nettleblack (June 2022) by non-binary writer Nat Reeve—touted as a ‘neo-Victorian queer farce that follows a runaway heir/ess and an organisation of crime-fighting misfits’—sounds like an absolute riot</image:caption>

Granta Books was launched ten years later, and now boasts a list of authors including Ben Lerner, Jenny Offill, Rebecca Solnit and Jeanette Winterson (to name a few). They also publish incredible works in translation, with books from Hiromi Kawakami, Han Kang, Sayaka Murata and Mariana Enriquez. <image:caption>Launched in 1973, Canongate published Scottish writers for its first twenty years. The indie grew and picked up momentum, but nothing could have prepared them for 2002. They were launched to crazy heights after they published Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, which went on to win the Booker Prize. Boosted by this success they’ve grown to publish more bestsellers, with an eclectic list with something for everyone. Canongate reconfirmed its ability to rival the Big 5 with Matt Haig’s books, which are a staple of every chart.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Founded 1996, Profile has grown from three people to fifty. You’ll probably find their imprints all over your shelves. But I must admit I have used Profile as a bit of a trojan horse, just so I can talk about Serpent’s Tail! Serpent’s Tail became an imprint of Profile Books in 2007. Their campaigns always stand out and their list is equally as impressive, including Mary Gaitskill, Ruby Tandoh, Chris Kraus and Torrey Peters. On top of all that talent, they also publish Carmen Maria Machado’s work, which I will never stop raving about (trust me, I even wrote my dissertation about it).</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 5 More Indie Publishers You Should Know - Verso Books</image:title>
<image:caption>Again, Verso might be an indie, but don’t let that fool you into thinking their impact is small. This staple of independent radical publishing publishes a staggering one hundred books a year. They’re the books I turn to when I want my mind to expand, to ignite ideas, challenge issues and imagine radical futures. Their books are also accessible and encourage curiosity, covering topics. I find their books challenging in a really important way, and they remind me the power that knowledge and reading give us in shaping our world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Want to ponder big issues, from class to climate change? Check out Pluto Press. Founded in 1969, the indie publisher focuses on radical, left-wing non-fiction. Their Outspoken series, short books ‘platforming underrepresented voices [and] intervening in important political issues’, are both concise and enlightening. I loved Lola Olufemi’s Feminism, Interrupted and next on my list is Behind Closed Doors by Natalie Fiennes, on transforming sex education.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - 5 Indie Publishers You Should Know - The Indigo Press</image:title>
<image:caption>Founded in 2018, The Indigo Press is the baby of this list, but don’t underestimate it. I discovered The Indigo Press when a bookseller at my beloved Mr B’s recommended Sam Mills’ Chauvo-Feminism to me while I was looking for a new feminist read. The publisher focuses on contemporary fiction and non-fiction ‘guided by a spirit of internationalism, feminism and social justice’—which if you haven’t already guessed, is right up my alley. Based on what they’ve achieved in the last three years, The Indigo Press is a growing indie to keep your eye on.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With titles inspired by their bookshops, Daunt Books Publishing came on my radar in 2020, when Brandon Taylor’s Real Life was shortlisted for the Booker. They consistently publish books that feel fresh, plus they know how to make a cover that looks great on the shelf. An extra shout out goes to this indie as I recently won a proof of Grace Lavery’s memoir Please Miss from them on Twitter. The book, which is out in February 2022, has already received praise from Carmen Maria Machado, Torrey Peters and Maggie Nelson, so it’s fair to say I’m excited.</image:caption>

Highlights from their list include Oyinkan Braithwaite’s My Sister, the Serial Killer, André Aciman’s Call Me By Your Name, Lot and Memorial by Brian Washington, Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians, Elaine Castillo’s America is Not the Heart…I could go on and on. <image:caption>Although relatively new on the scene Fitzcarraldo Editions, founded in 2014, are rapidly becoming iconic. In a busy market their books stick out (in a good way), with uniform blue and white text-only covers, they seem designed to make you intrigued. Fitzcarraldo Editions has built a reputation for publishing innovative contemporary fiction and long-from essays. On my to-read list is Ill Feelings, Alice Hattrick’s memoir/literary non-fiction debut on living with a medically unexplained illness.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When you’re struggling with your mental health, one of the most valuable things is feeling seen. Other people have been where you have been, and have made it to the other side. You’re not the only one who has felt like this. Queenie is a twenty-something woman being swept along by a tidal wave of anxiety. She’s making all the wrong decisions for herself, because making healthy decisions isn’t top of the list when you’re barely holding it together. We follow Queenie as she begins to accept something has to change. That she deserves better. You’ll root for Queenie like a best friend, and hopefully, realise you should be rooting for yourself like that too. tw: sexual violence, racism.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Existing on earth feels really f-ing difficult sometimes. So imagine how it must feel for an alien who’s just been dropped here. Matt Haig’s The Humans is a heartwarming tale of the messiness of humans, and what makes life worth living. Although it deals with some heavy topics, and existential questions, The Humans still manages to feel endearing and lighthearted. We see the world through the eyes of an alien and discover why humans are the way they are, even when it doesn’t make much sense. tw: suicide.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sometimes the depression-induced brain fog makes it difficult to stick with a narrative. So a book you can dip in and out of for comfort is perfect. In Dear Reader, Cathy Rentzenbrink talks us through the books that have been there for her, through the good times and the bad. From childhood favourites to the books that got her through the death of her brother. We get a snippet of what each book means to Cathy, and more widely, the escape that books offer us in life. <image:title>Home - 4 Books to Get You Out of a Depression Spiral - How to Fail - Elizabeth Day</image:title>
<image:caption>You’ve probably heard of Elizabeth Day’s chart-topping podcast How to Fail, where she interviews a celebrity about three ‘failures’ in their life. It’s as good as everyone says it is (I dare you to listen to Andrew Scott’s episode and not fall in love with him), mainly due to Elizabeth’s passion for exploring failure as a force for good. In How to Fail (the book) Elizabeth talks us through the big failures of her life and what she’s learnt from them. But the book never veers into toxic positivity ‘everything happens for a reason!’ territory. Some ‘failures’ in life are painful and unfair, and we should let ourselves grieve them. How to Fail offers a sensitive and hopeful way to look at life when everything feels doomed, and I return to its philosophy often. tw: miscarriage.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Cookbooks I’d Save in a House Fire - Tin Can Magic - Jessica Elliott Dennison</image:title>
<image:caption>Every cookbook these days seems to have tin or tray in the title, but I’d let them all burn to keep this one. Tin Can Magic bases its recipes on different store-cupboard staples, from chickpeas and chopped tomatoes to the humble tin of sweetcorn. The recipes are fuss-free and full of comforting flavours you’ll want to come back to again and again. Helpful substitute lists under each recipe mean you can always cobble something together without a dash to Sainsbury’s. Must make: Sausage Braised Lentils</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Cookbooks I’d Save in a House Fire - Dishoom</image:title>
<image:caption>Fuss-free definitely isn’t the name of the game when it comes to this cookbook. But if you’re prepared to put in some elbow grease (via a pestle and mortar) and do some overnight marinading, you will be rewarded with the best curry you’ll ever eat. Dishoom is the cookbook I go to when I want to make something really special and full of heart. The ingredients lists might be daunting at first, but once you’ve cracked a few dishes you’ll want to spend all weekend trying new ones. For a more relaxed affair, a visit to one of their restaurants is advised. Must make: Chole Bhature</image:caption>

No matter how stunning the cover is (yes I know the gold embossing is hard to resist) if you flip it open and wouldn’t cook the first few recipes you see, PUT THAT BOOK DOWN. A Table for Friends passed this test with flying covers. Everything looked delicious and like something I would actually cook. Definitely one for the Christmas list.</image:caption>

I was introduced to Fresh India by my dal-loving, vegan boyfriend, and now it’s one of my go-to sources for plant-based recipes (if you ignore the delicious paneer curries). Unlike our friends at Dishoom, the recipes in Fresh India are don’t need a ton of prep time and ingredients, but still have a lovely depth of flavour. It’s making me hungry just thinking about it.
